Wal-Mart is a plague on our nation (I refuse to shop there). As they enter a community, dozens of local businesses are forced to close, from grocery stores and hardware stores to bakeries and drug stores. I've watched it happen in communities near us. Small business owners must close up shop and look for work elsewhere - or they must go to work for the great beast itself at near minimum wage.
Wal-Mart, in it's constant quest for ever cheaper crap to sell has caused the collapse of American industry and the rise of Chinese industry.
Flowing Data has a time-lapse map showing the slow destruction of our nation.
We already knew that Walmart was a disease, now we have a visual representation of it. It's weird how ominous those flickering dots are, especially as they begin to speed up. Several of the bloggers I've seen blog about this have pointed out that the chart almost looks like the spread of cancer. To borrow the analogy even further, I wonder if we've passed the point of no return with Walmart and the cancer has become terminal.
