MISS AVERAGE AMERICA
Our all-time favorite beauty contest is the National College Queen Pageant, a little-known pageant that awarded some lucky college girl a title and prizes for excelling in the most mundane activities imaginable. "We are idealizing the well-rounded average," explained the show's promoter in 1962. Some of the events in which contestants had to compete:
Blouse-ironing
Cooking hamburgers
"Doodling designs with colored inks on electric blankets"
Carrying coffee cups and pots across a room to the judges' table and pouring (to evaluate "skill and poise as a hostess")
Sandal decoration
A fierce debate on "right and wrong hairstyles."
